A weekend fire at Arrowhead Middle School in Kansas City, Kansas, closed the school Monday and forced school officials to relocate classes for the rest of the week.

Classes will be moved to the Homefield Kansas City sports complex for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and canceled on Friday, Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools officials said.

Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Department crews were called to the school at about 9 p.m. Friday, and said the fire damage was contained to a classroom, said Battalion Chief Thomas Gripp. That space and an adjacent hallway had moderate smoke damage.

No activities were taking place at the school at the time. The cause of the fire was deemed to be a mechanical failure in the HVAC system, Gripp said.

“Our maintenance team is working diligently to thoroughly clean the building and remove the smoke and soot to ensure a safe environment for everyone,” school officials wrote on the Arrowhead Middle School website.
