Kansas inmate convicted in 2023 attack on corrections officer: court documents
An inmate at Lansing Correctional Facility has been convicted of battery, accused of injuring a corrections officer while carrying a homemade weapon early last year.
Eli Mendoza, 34, was charged with battery of a corrections officer, a felony, in relation to an incident in the maximum-security area of Lansing on Jan. 12, 2023 in Lansing, Kansas. Mendoza apparently was involved in a fight with another inmate, and when an officer came to break up the fight, Mendoza landed several blows on the officer, according to court documents.
Mendoza is accused of attacking the officer with a shiv, or a homemade weapon shaved down to a sharp point, according to court documents. The officer suffered mild head wounds, court documents read, but did not require stitches.
Mendoza pleaded not guilty to the charge on July 24. A Leavenworth County jury found Mendoza guilty in the attack on Monday. A sentencing hearing for Mendoza will take place Dec. 6, according to court records.
