A student at Pleasant Hill Elementary was hospitalized Tuesday after part of a tree fell on several students outside the elementary school.

Pleasant Hill police officers responded to Pleasant Hill Elementary, at 327 N McKissock St in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, around 2:25 p.m. Tuesday following reports of the fallen tree.

A branch from a tree bordering school grounds fell on the students during recess, around 1:45 p.m., according to Pleasant Hill R-III superintendent Wayne Burke. Four students were injured in total.

One student was transported to the hospital, while the three other students’ injuries were addressed by school nursing staff and emergency responders on site.

Pleasant Hill parents were notified directly about the incident, which police have classified as an accident. Additional staff members will be on site tomorrow to support students as needed, Burke said.

“Please keep the students and staff in your thoughts and prayer,” the Pleasant Hill Police Department wrote on Facebook Tuesday.

Observed wind gusts in the nearby Lee’s Summit area reached 48 mph just before 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
