Kansas City metro area faces severe thunderstorm warnings on Thursday night

The Kansas City metropolitan area is under a severe thunderstorm warning for Thursday night, according to the National Weather Service.

Areas including Kansas City, Missouri, Kansas City, Kansas and Overland Park could experience winds up to 70 mph, according to the NWS. The thunderstorm warning area extends as far west as Reno and Bonner Springs in Kansas and as far east as Excelsior Springs and Elmira in Missouri.

The severe thunderstorm warning also extends to much of northwestern Missouri, as far north as Bethany and as far south as Kingston.

Communities in northwestern Missouri can also expect potential quarter-sized hail, according to the NWS. Cumulatively, the two storm warning areas include 416 schools and 25 hospitals.
