Drivers had to avoid the area of Interstate 435 near Missouri Highway 210 in Clay County Saturday, as crews worked to clean up a crash involving a semi tractor-trailer hauling cheese, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.

Troopers responded to the crash just after noon Saturday. The cause of the crash was still being investigated, said MSHP spokesman Cpl. Justin Ewing.

The semi was the only vehicle involved in the crash and it caught fire after crashing, according to the MSHP. The driver was transported to a hospital with serious injuries, Ewing said.

Two lanes in northbound I-435 were closed and all southbound lanes were closed just before 1:30 p.m., according to the Missouri Department of Transportation. Clean up was complete around 6 p.m.

In KC Scout cameras, the semitractor-trailer appeared to be resting partially on the interstate median. A tow was at the scene as crews worked to clear the road.
