One dead after a vehicle hit a dumpster in the road in south Kansas City Saturday

One person was killed after the vehicle she was a passenger struck a large trash dumpster left in the roadway in south Kansas City, a police spokesperson said Sunday morning.

Police responded around 8 a.m. Saturday to a single-vehicle at the intersection of Hillcrest Road and Fairlane Drive, said Sgt. Philip DiMartino, a Kansas City Police Department spokesperson.

According to initial police reports, the driver in a white Ford Escape was northbound on Hillcrest Road when the vehicle struck a large trash dumpster left in the roadway. Both the driver and passenger were taken to the hospital, where the female passenger was pronounced dead Saturday evening from her injuries, DiMartino said.

The condition of the driver was not released.

The name and age of the person killed in the crash was not released. No other details were available.

The death marks the city’s 74th traffic fatality reported so far this year compared to 75 this time last year, according to data tracked by police.
