KC Pet Project got called on a neglected dog. They found some unattended, hungry kids
An officer with KC Pet Project’s Animal Services Division discovered a group of unattended children while investigating a neglected dog at a home Wednesday, the agency said.
In a social media post Thursday evening, KC Pet Project said an officer responding to a call about a neglected dog found the animal running loose outside a home. The officer noted the dog had recently had puppies and was still producing milk, but could not find the puppies. The dog was taken to a shelter.
Later that day, the officer returned to the home and found a group of unattended children who had unintentionally let the dog loose.
“Multiple small children had been left alone in the home, with no knowledge of when or if their mother would return,” the social media post said. “They were hungry and asked our officer if she had any snacks.”
The officer contacted the state’s Department of Social Services.
Spokespeople for KC Pet Project and the Department of Social Services did not respond to requests for additional information about the situation Friday.
“Thankfully, our officer was able to reunite the momma dog with her puppies for nourishment and ensure the children received the help they needed,” KC Pet Project’s post said. “While we wait for more information, we’re hopeful their situation will improve, and we’ll continue addressing the long-term needs of the dog and her puppies.”
