One killed, two seriously injured in two-vehicle crash in Independence

Update: Police on Tuesday identified the driver killed in the crash as 22-year-old Davontae Telar of Independence, said Sgt. Jeff Buck with the Independence Police Department’s traffic safety unit.

One person was killed and two others seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash Sunday night in Independence, a police spokesman said.

The crash occurred around 10:45 p.m. at the intersection of East Salisbury Road and South Downey Avenue, a residential area a few blocks east of Missouri 291 in Independence, said Sgt. Jeff Buck with the Independence Police Department’s traffic safety unit.

The driver of a 2019 Nissan Altima pulled out from Downey into the path of a 2013 Kia Sorento headed east on Salisbury. Buck said the two vehicles collided.

The driver of the Altima was killed in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the Altima and the driver of the Sorento were taken to hospitals with serious injuries.

The name of the person killed in the crash was not released until the family could be notified.

Buck said the crash remains under investigation.
