Boy might get to claim $10,000 found at hotel
Ten-year-old Tyler Schaefer might just get to keep the $10,000 he found in a hotel room drawer last year.
Officials from the Missouri state treasurer’s office wrote Thursday to Police Chief Darryl Forté asking police to turn the money over to them so the office could start proceedings to allow the boy and his father, who lives in South Dakota, to claim the money.
Tyler, visiting here with his dad, was commended for turning in the neatly stacked bills he found in May 2013. No owner has stepped forward.
The treasurer’s office indicated Tuesday that the boy could not get the money, but after a public outcry from a story published in The Star, the office researched state laws and said the boy could make a claim.
