Man with sawed-off shotgun charged after shots fired at Overland Park police at McDonald’s
A Leavenworth man accused of shooting at police officers with a sawed-off shotgun in a McDonald’s parking lot in Overland Park has been charged with seven felonies, including attempted capital murder..
Sulif Ibnal Sid Wilkins, 34, was charged Tuesday in Johnson County court with attempted capital murder, two counts of aggravated robbery, two charges of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and two charges of carrying a sawed-off shotgun with a barrel shorter than 18 inches.
Overland Park police officers had responded to a call at the fast-food restaurant at College Boulevard and Oakmont Street in Overland Park around 5:15 a.m. Tuesday.
An employee who said a man — later identified as Wilkins — pointed a gun at him and another woman, according to officer John Lacy, an OPPD spokesperson.
Through traffic camera footage, officers saw Wilkins sitting on top of an employee’s car in the McDonald’s parking lot, according to Lacy. The employee confronted Wilkins, at which time Wilkins allegedly pointed his gun at the employee but did not shoot.
When officers arrived at the restaurant, they reported seeing Wilkins commit armed robbery in the parking lot, according to Lacy. When officers told Wilkins to drop his weapon, Wilkins is accused of firing his sawed-off shotgun at one of the officers until it either jammed or ran out of shells.
Wilkins then dropped the weapon and was taken into custody, Lacy said. No injuries were reported, and no officers fired their weapons, according to Lacy.
Wilkins previously lived in Raytown, Missouri, and was unemployed at the time of his arrest, according to court records. Wilkins has previously been incarcerated multiple times on convictions of assault, armed criminal action, robbery and resisting arrest, according to court records.
Most recently, Wilkins was incarcerated from 2018 to 2022 after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter, according to court records.
Wilkins is being held in the Johnson County Detention Center on a $5 million bond.
