Kansas City woman, 25, charged with DWI in fatal crash with cyclist
A 25-year-old Kansas City woman accused of driving drunk and hitting a cyclist, killing him, has been charged with DWI, court records show.
Emily A. Davis faces one felony charge of driving while intoxicated, resulting in the death of another person. During her first court appearance on Tuesday, Davis pleaded not guilty.
Davis was driving southbound on NW Tullison Road in Platte County around 5:30 a.m. Monday when her red Chevrolet Cruze hit the back of a bicycle being ridden by 25-year-old Xavier Anderson, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The force of the crash threw Anderson off of the bike, which swerved into an electrical pole just off of the roadway and broke into several pieces, according to court documents.
Anderson was transported to North Kansas City Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 9 a.m. Monday, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. He was not wearing a helmet.
After a piece of debris from Davis’ car was found at the scene of the crash, a Riverside police officer pulled Davis over at a roundabout about half-mile from where the crash occurred, according to court documents. When an MSHP trooper arrived at the roundabout around 7 a.m., he determined that Davis had been drinking.
Davis allegedly told police that she had spent most of the previous night at Argosy Casino, where she drank from around 10 p.m. Sunday until about 2 a.m. Monday, according to court documents.
Davis is being held in the Platte County Detention Center on a $50,000 cash bond. She will next appear in Platte County court at 9 a.m. Oct. 1.
Anderson’s death was the 62nd traffic fatality recorded by the Missouri State Highway Patrol in 2024, according to MSHP data. These deaths took place during 58 fatal crashes, according to MSHP data.
A total of 321 traffic crashes in Missouri have been caused by a drunk driver since the start of 2024, leading to five deaths and 122 injuries, according to MSHP data.
