One of the latest episodes of HGTV’s “Bargain Mansions” show saw host Tamara Day take a big swing at renovating a house formerly owned by a well-known golf club maker in the Kansas City area.

The home, located at 12811 W. 71st St., in Shawnee, was built in 1865 and bought by golf club maker Kenneth Smith in the early 1990s, ReeceNichols real estate agent Kerwin Holloway said. Smith made custom golf clubs for the likes of former presidents Richard Nixon and Dwight Eisenhower, actor Bob Hope, baseball hall of famer Mickey Mantle, singer Sammy Davis Jr., and local golf legend Tom Watson.

“This house had been not just neglected but abandoned for a really long time and the really incredible part about it is that it had such a strong significance to Kansas City,” Day said in a statement. “I love the story of how Kenneth Smith started his business right here on this property...”

Following the remodeling, the house is on sale for $1.5 million by ReeceNichols. Holloway said the company purchased the home in 2019 along with the Kenneth Estates, a subdivision of 92 homes in Shawnee. The home was gutted by contractors Holloway had hired long before he reached out to Day and her remodeling crew, Open Door Builders, for guidance on what to do.

The four-bedroom, three-bathroom home kept its stone appearance in the remodel and added a three-car garage. Wide windows and a hilltop location give residents a great view of the outdoor scenery from the dining room, kitchen and master bedroom.

The basement doubles as a wine cellar and leads visitors to an outdoor patio. Holloway said the underground cellar’s exposed brick and stone make it one of the coolest rooms on the property.

Holloway and ReeceNichols also hosted a watch party for subdivision residents when the episode debuted Wednesday, Sept. 4, and he said everyone was impressed with how the home turned out.

The home is near I-435 and I-35, making it easy to get to downtown Kansas City. It’s also close to AdventHealth hospital and Sar-Ko Par Trails Park.

Nearby schools include Rhein Benninghoven Elementary School, Trailridge Middle School and Shawnee Mission Northwest High School.
