Overland Park police shut down westbound traffic on I-435 Thursday afternoon while responding to an accident that left at least one driver injured and his car in flames.

Police and first responders, including a medical unit, first responded to the crash around 2:10 p.m.

The crash occurred when a driver turning off the highway onto Metcalf Avenue was hit by another car, according to Officer John Lacy, a spokesperson for the Overland Park Police Department.

“It looked like he was trying to get off at Metcalf,” Lacy said. “He was trying to cross traffic when a white vehicle hit him and the vehicle immediately went into flames.”

The accident was not fatal, Lacy said. The driver’s condition is not known.
