One man died in a south Kansas City pond Saturday after a canoe he was in flipped over, a spokesperson for the Kansas City Fire Department said.

First responders were called around 5:30 p.m. Saturday to a pond near the intersection of Missouri 150 highway and Horridge Road, where witnesses reported two people had been in a canoe that overturned, said KCFD Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins.

One of the people who had been in the boat, an 8-year-old, was able to make it to the bank. The other person, a 23-year-old man, was not able to swim to shore and drowned, Hopkins said.

The man’s body was eventually recovered with the assistance of swimmers, a Missouri State Highway Patrol boat equipped with a sonar system and a search dog.

Both people in the boat were not wearing life jackets, Hopkins said.

“KCFD would like to stress to the public to wear a life jacket any time you are in a body of water where you can not see the bottom, and if you are not a strong swimmer or cannot swim,” Hopkins said.
