Driver struck, killed while standing near highway in KC’s Northland after earlier crash
A driver who had allegedly gotten out of their vehicle after a collision was then killed when they were struck by a truck along Missouri Highway 210 in Kansas City’s Northland Wednesday morning, police said.
The original crash happened along one of the westbound lanes of Highway 210 around 5:30 a.m., said Officer Alayna Gonzalez with the Kansas City Police Department. A Ram truck stopped in traffic near the North Norfleet Road intersection, and was rear-ended by a Hyundai car, causing both drivers to get out of their vehicles. No one was injured in that collision, according to police.
While the drivers were waiting for police to arrive, the driver of the Hyundai, who was standing on a lane line along the shoulder, was hit by a Chevrolet truck, Gonzalez said.
The driver of the Chevrolet “did not see the flashers on the Hyundai until the last second” and then swerved and struck the Hyundai driver, Gonzalez said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the person who died has not yet been released by authorities. The driver of the Chevrolet truck was not injured, police said.
Westbound lanes of Highway 210 were closed for about three and a half hours while police worked at the scene.
The death is Kansas City’s 55th traffic fatality of 2024, compared to 51 at this time last year.
