Leavenworth inmate found unresponsive Monday evening, later pronounced dead

An inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Leavenworth has died after being found unresponsive Monday evening.

According to a news release from the Department of Justice, at approximately 7:50 p.m., responding prison employees began life-saving measures after finding Sean Evan Thomas Bad Bear, 33, unresponsive. Emergency medical services were requested while life-saving efforts continued.

He was later pronounced dead by an EMS personnel.

Bad Bear was sentenced in Montana to 10 months in prison for a Feb. 2019 assault by strangling a partner, as well as crime on a reservation. He had been in custody at the Leavenworth prison since March 21, 2024.

No employees or other inmates were injured and no one else was in danger, according to the DOJ.

Bad Bear’s cause of death has not been revealed and is still under investigation, officials said.
