Driver dies as car overturns, tumbles down embankment into gorge in KC. What we know
The driver of a silver Mercedes 300D died in a crash after being ejected as the car tumbled down an embankment to a gorge in Kansas City, a police spokesman said.
Officers responded to the crash around 6:40 p.m. Sunday near East 63rd Street Trafficway and Hardesty Avenue in the Swope Park Ridge-Winchester neighborhood, said Capt. Jake Becchina with the Kansas City Police Department.
The driver of the Mercedes, who was the only one inside the car, was declared dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation showed that the driver was headed east in the Mercedes at high speeds. Becchina said the driver failed to negotiate a curve, and the car left the road, overturning several times as it went down a 120-foot grassy embankment into a gorge.
The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the car, Becchina said.
The death is Kansas City’s 54th traffic fatality of the year. By this time last year, there were 49 traffic deaths.
The investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing.
