Smithville police investigate death of man found in wooded area over the weekend

Smithville police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found in a wooded area over the weekend.

Officers with the Smithville Police Department discovered the body of a white adult man in dense vegetation in the Diamond Crest neighborhood of north Smithville, near Bauman Park and Smithville Lake.

The deceased man has not been publicly identified. His body has been released to the Clay County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Smithville Police obtained and carried out a search warrant Monday for a home near where the body was found, according to a Monday news release. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas City Crime Scene Unit were also involved in the search.

No arrests have been made and no suspects have been named in the man’s death.

Police did not share what time the body was found. The Smithville Police Department was unavailable for further comment Monday evening.
