Flights delayed, canceled at KCI as global tech outage affects airlines
A global outage in technology systems Friday morning has caused flights at Kansas City International Airport to be delayed and canceled, the airport announced on social media.
Just before 10 a.m., 4% of flights scheduled to depart MCI were canceled and 15% have been delayed, according to FlightAware.
“MCI is open this morning and several of our airline partners are working through a technology issue that is impacting flight operations,” the airport said on X. “Flying today? Please be in touch with your airline.”
As of late morning, the airport said flight operations were stabilizing, but still recommended that travelers check with their airlines for updates.
The U.S. Department of Transportation said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter, that it is monitoring technical issues affecting airlines. It also said passengers affected can check controllable delays at FlightRights.gov for customer compensation.
The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement it is “closely monitoring a technical issue impacting IT systems at U.S. airlines. Several airlines have requested FAA assistance with ground stops until the issue is resolved.”
Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said the issue believed to be behind the outage was not a security incident or cyberattack, the Associated Press reported.
The outage is affecting businesses, hospitals, banks and other operations across the globe, the AP reported.
