Travel + Leisure Magazine named Kansas City International Airport the sixth best airport in the nation in its ranking released Tuesday.
For the 2024 World’s Best Awards, travelers rated airports on a variety of factors including dining, design, check-in and security. More than 180,000 Travel + Leisure readers participated in the survey, which also had categories like best hotels, cities and trains.
Kansas City opened a new $1.5 billion terminal in February 2023 with 40 gates and almost 50 food options. Known by the code MCI, the airport had its busiest May this year, with 1.1 million travelers passing through that month.
This is the first time in the past five years that the Kansas City airport has made the list.
The magazine’s readers favored regional airports in the 2024 ranking. None of them are in the 25 busiest in the nation and four below the top 50, according to federal transportation data.
