Firefighters battled a blaze at a former Kansas City’s mayor’s home Wednesday evening in South Kansas City.

Property records show the home in the 1000 block of Greenway Terrace belonged to the late former Mayor Richard L. Berkley, who served as mayor from 1979 to 1991.

No injuries were reported in the fire.

Crews responded around 6:40 p.m. to a house fire in the 1000 block of Greenway Terrace, where they reported heavy fire and smoke from the garage of a two-story home, according to Michael Hopkins, a spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department.

The home’s occupants were able to evacuate on their own, and crews brought the fire under control. Red Cross services were ordered for two adults, and the fire department ordered a dangerous buildings call.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the fire department.

Berkley was the city’s longest serving mayor. He died in November 2023.
