A broken window and signs of a possible burglary are being blamed for the shutdown of the beach at Lake Olathe on Father’s Day.

The Olathe Parks and Recreation department posted on Facebook Sunday that overnight vandalism caused the closing of the beach at Lake Olathe.

On Monday, Olathe police spokesperson Sgt. John Moncayo confirmed that the damage was consistent with a burglary. Glass was broken to gain entry into what appeared to be an aquatics building. It is not clear if anything was taken, he said.

Cody Kennedy, chief communications and marketing officer with the Olathe parks and recreation department, told The Star that the beach is normally closed Monday through Wednesday, so they hope to have it open again like usual on Thursday.

Cleanup is complete, Kennedy said. Officials have not disclosed the cost of repairs.

The investigation is ongoing, police said. They have not released a suspect description.
