Missouri man’s first scratch of lottery ticket earned him $1 million. It was just a start
A Missouri man hadn’t won yet on Missouri Lottery’s new $5,000,000 Fortune scratcher game since it began last month, so he recently bought two tickets, at $50 each.
After scratching at one of the tickets, he thought he had won $1 million. And then he kept scratching.
The ticket bought at Sunny’s Liquor & Tobacco, 3921 N.W. Barry Road, Kansas City, won the man the $5 million grand prize.
“I scratched a coin stack symbol and thought I’d just won $1 million,” the winner said. “I kept scratching and (saw) another coin, so then I knew it was $5 million because I know the game.”
It’s the 24th millionaire created by the Missouri Lottery in 2024, which took place during the 24th week of the year.
“This is outstanding,” Lester Elder, executive director of the Missouri Lottery, said in a statement. “It is just incredible to realize we have averaged a new millionaire every week so far this year.”
Missouri Lottery players have won more than $20 billion in prizes, and more than $8 billion has been generated for the state and public education since the beginning of the lottery.
The new game, $5,000,000 Fortune, started May 28. Since then, the game has generated more than $241 million in unclaimed prizes, including two more top prizes of $5 million, three $1 million prizes and 36 prizes of $50,000.
