A driver died and three passengers were critically injured late Wednesday when the car they were in crashed into a utility pole in Kansas City’s Westside South neighborhood, a police spokeswoman said.

The crash occurred about 11:15 p.m. Wednesday along Southwest Boulevard near Madison Avenue, said Officer Alayna Gonzalez with the Kansas City Police Department.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of a blue Toyota Corolla was headed east on Southwest Boulevard at a high speed. The driver failed to negotiate a curve and the car slid off the right side of the road and struck a telephone pole, Gonzalez said.

The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Three passengers, who also were not wearing seat belts, suffered critical injuries and were taken to hospitals, Gonzalez said.

Two of the passengers were in serious but critical but stable condition Thursday morning. The third passenger remained in critical condition.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, Gonzalez said.

The driver’s death is the 21st traffic fatality so far this year in Kansas City. That compares to 11 fatalities by this time a year ago.
