A juvenile died after being struck by a van that fled the scene Saturday night in Kansas City.

Officers responded around 6:33 p.m. to the area of East 23rd Street and Chelsea Avenue, according to Sgt. Phillip DiMartino, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

A juvenile was riding a red Serengeti minibike on Chelsea, when they entered the intersection without stopping for a stop sign, DiMartino said.

A white van struck the minibike, ejecting the juvenile, who was not wearing a helmet. The van left the scene, traveling west on 23rd without stopping.

The juvenile was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. They were pronounced dead later that day.

The investigation is ongoing.
