One person was taken to the hospital with critical injuries after a Tuesday afternoon crash in Kansas City on Interstate 70, according to police.

Officers were dispatched around 4:35 p.m. to a collision involving four vehicles in the eastbound lanes near the Van Brunt Boulevard overpass, Kansas City police said in a statement Tuesday night.

Investigators determined a red sedan stopped suddenly on I-70, possibly to allow for merging traffic, and was rear-ended by a Chevrolet pickup.

A semitractor-trailer rear-ended the pickup truck, police said, and a fourth vehicle — a Dodge Ram pickup — rear-ended the trailer.

The driver of the Dodge Ram was the only person injured in the collision, police said, and was not wearing a seatbelt. Police said the driver remained in critical condition Tuesday night.

Further details of the injured driver were not immediately disclosed by police.

Kansas City police continued to investigate the crash Tuesday.
