Driver dies after hitting railroad bridge early Monday in Kansas City suburb

A driver died following a single-vehicle crash early Monday in Independence.

Officers responded to the crash around 12:20 a.m. on 23rd Street just east of Crysler Avenue, according to Sgt. Steven Boles, a spokesman for the Independence Police Department.

Daniel S. Nelson, 43, was traveling eastbound on 23rd in a Chevrolet Impala and struck a railroad bridge.

Nelson died from his injuries at the scene.

Police believe he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation, and police believe alcohol was a contributing factor.
