Update: The pedestrian killed while crossing U.S. 40 highway in Independence was identified as 62-year-old Melvin Vangunda of Kansas City, said Sgt. Jeff Buck of the Independence Police Department.

A pedestrian who was hit by a SUV while crossing U.S. Highway 40 in Independence on Thursday evening has died, according to police.

Officers were dispatched shortly before 6 p.m. to a crash involving the pedestrian and one vehicle near 36th Terrace, Sgt. Jeff Buck of Independence police said in a statement.

The driver of a Hyundai Tucson was headed east on the highway while the pedestrian was in the roadway, according to police.

The pedestrian, who was not identified on Thursday, was transported by ambulance to the hospital and died shortly after arriving there.

The driver remained on scene, according to police. No one in the vehicle was injured.

Independence police continued to investigate the crash Thursday night.
