The driver of a scooter was seriously injured in a crash late Wednesday afternoon in Kansas City’s Western 49-63 neighborhood, according to police.

Officers responded to the crash around 5:47 p.m. at East 57th Street and Rockhill Road, according to a written statement by Kansas City police. It involved a white Volkswagen sedan whose driver reported not seeing the scooter before pulling out onto 57th Street.

The driver of the Vespa scooter struck the driver’s side of the Volkswagen and was thrown over its hood before landing on the pavement, police said.

The driver of the scooter — who was wearing a helmet — was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. Police said the other driver was not injured.
