A 4-year-old student was critically injured Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a motorist near a Shawnee elementary school.

Police officers, firefighters and paramedics responded to the collision around 3 p.m. in the 11400 block of West 75th Street, police said in a news release.

The child was taken by ambulance to a hospital in critical condition but was listed as stable Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The crash happened just south of Shawanoe Elementary School. A spokesman for the Shawnee Mission School District confirmed the injured child was a student but said additional information could not be disclosed.

Police said the driver was headed east on 75th Street when the child was hit. The driver remained on scene, according to police.

Shawnee’s Traffic Safety Unit continued to investigate the cause Tuesday afternoon.
