A driver died and a passenger was injured after they crashed into a tree Thursday evening in Kansas City’s Marlborough Heights neighborhood, according to police.

Officers responded shortly before 7 p.m. to a reported collision near Troost and President avenues involving a Saturn SUV, according to a written statement from Kansas City police.

Investigators determined the SUV was being driven northbound on Troost at high speed when the driver lost control. The SUV crossed the southbound lanes of traffic, left the roadway and hit a utility pole wire before striking a large tree, police said.

The driver and a front seat passenger were taken to the hospital. Police said the driver died after arriving there, and the passenger was treated for minor injuries.

The identity of the driver was not disclosed by police. Police said the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Police were also investigating whether the driver was impaired at the time.
