Fire crews responding to a carbon monoxide call found a teenage boy and two men dead inside a home in the East Blue Valley neighborhood of Kansas City, a fire department spokesperson said Monday.

Firefighters responded to the call at 7:30 a.m. Monday at a home in the 6800 block of East 12th Terrace on Kansas City’s East Side, said Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins, a spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department.

Arriving crews found the bodies of the men, ages 42 and 34, and the 14-year-old boy inside the home. Their identities were being withheld until family could be notified.

Firefighters also detected elevated levels of carbon monoxide inside the home, Hopkins said.

Their deaths have been determined to be accidental, Hopkins said. Investigators determined the carbon monoxide came from a generator that the the victims were running indoors.

People should never operate a gas-powered generator, no matter the size, indoors, in a confined space or inside a garage, Hopkins said. Instead, such generators should be operated outside where there is adequate ventilation available.
