Boutique riverfront hotel close to KC Current stadium taking shape. See the progress

Developers of a new, $30 million boutique hotel, the first hotel to be built on the Berkley Riverfront in Kansas City, hope to open to guests in April of 2024.

The hotel with its modern design, Origin KC, will have 118 rooms, including some bunk room suites, and a uniquely-branded full-service restaurant and bar. The restaurant will offer some private dining options as well as picnic/play options for food.

The hotel will feature locally inspired design and art, a theme that will carry throughout the hotel and restaurant.

According to Joseph Thrash, a partner of the Thrash Group, the hotel’s Mississippi-based developer, a signature fountain, an art piece, is in the concept process and will be tied into the hotel and restaurant theme. “The fountain they are dreaming up right now is really a lot of fun,” Thrash said in an email. It will be installed in a large, landscaped front courtyard with outdoor seating.

Along with multiple meeting rooms and a grand meeting room, there is an elevated smaller meeting space with a balcony overlooking the fountain and riverfront. Other amenities include a state-of-the-art fitness center, water bottle filling stations, a yoga center, plus complimentary bikes and bike storage. The hotel also offers curated experience and tour packages, as well as a pet package.

Developers broke ground in October for a two-story, open-air, 8,200 square-foot beer garden dubbed, ‘Two Birds, One Stone,’ located in the park directly across from the hotel in an area called ‘The Grove.’ Plans call for the $7 million beer garden, to open in 2024. The beer garden will have views of the Missouri River, the Bond Bridge and the downtown skyline.

The hotel, which will employ about 70 people, adds to the redevelopment along the riverfront where the KC Current women’s soccer stadium is under construction just steps from Origin KC. The KC Streetcar riverfront extension has plans to open in the area in 2025. Union Berkley Riverfront and CORE, both large, upscale apartment complexes, are open on the riverfront and Bar K, a popular bar and restaurant with a dog park, opened in 2018.
