A motorcyclist is hospitalized was serious injuries Sunday in Kansas City after driving off the interstate, police said.

Just before 5:15 p.m., the driver of a blue Kawasaki motorcycle was headed westbound on Interstate 70 when he seemingly lost control of the vehicle and ran off the road just under Benton Boulevard, then hit a highway construction sign and several orange cones, according to an initial incident report from the Kansas City Police Department.

The driver was thrown from the motorcycle, and the bike landed partially in the embankment on the north side of the highway before bursting into flames, police said.
