The first day of school came to an abrupt end for students at Kansas City Public Schools buildings that don’t have air conditioning, the district announced Monday.

“Due to extreme heat, we have released students early in our Tier 1 schools,” the district said shortly after 1 p.m. on X, formerly known as Twitter. “The heat index is above 100 degrees, and many of our secondary buildings don’t have central A/C.”

The district said families have been notified.

The district’s Tier 1 schools include Central High School, East High School, Lincoln Prep, Northeast High School, Paseo Academy, Southeast High School and Success Academy at Anderson.

Paseo Academy will still hold its Back-to-School night/Verizon Device Rollout at 5 p.m. Monday, the district said.

The heat index skyrocketed to 117 degrees shortly before 2 p.m. at Kansas City International Airport. Dangerously hot conditions are expected to continue for most of the week.
