Gate’s Bar-B-Q in Leawood sustained significant smoke damage throughout the restaurant when a fire flared up in the kitchen overnight, a fire official said Friday.

Leawood firefighters responded to the fire shortly after midnight at the restaurant at 2001 W. 103rd Terrace, said Deputy Chief Jarrett Hawley III with the Leawood Fire Department.

An employee at the restaurant at the time reported the fire. The first firefighters on the scene discovered the fire in the kitchen. The fire was declared under control about 1:05 a.m.

No one was injured in the fire, but smoke from the blaze caused significant damage throughout the building. The fire caused minor structural damage in the kitchen, Hawley said.

An estimated cost of the damages was not available. The cause and origin of the fire remains under investigation.
