A driver injured in a Wednesday afternoon car crash in south Kansas City died in the hospital on Thursday morning, according to police.

The crash happened at a stoplight at 95th Terrace and Bannister Road, Kansas City police said in a written statement. Police did not release the identity of the driver Thursday.

Around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, officers with Metro Patrol were waiting at the intersection for a red light to change. Then they saw a white Nissan minivan pass them on the shoulder of the road and go through the intersection.

The minivan crashed into a traffic pole. Its driver and sole occupant was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not believed at the time to be life-threatening, according to police.

Crash investigators were notified of the driver’s death early Thursday.

The traffic death marks Kansas City’s 56th of 2023, according to police data. There were 54 traffic fatalities during the same time period in 2022.
