A motorcycle driver died after losing control and being ejected from his vehicle Sunday night on a Kansas City highway.

Officers responded around 10:36 p.m. to the northbound U.S. 71 Highway ramp off of eastbound Interstate 670, said Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman with the Kansas City Police Department.

The driver of a blue Yamaha was traveling at a high speed, lost control and hit a guardrail on the right side of the road, Becchina said. Then, the impact ejected the driver, and he landed in the grassy embankment.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The motorcycle traveled further down the roadway before stopping in a lane of travel. An unknown person stopped and moved the Yamaha, so they could continue driving.

The incident was the 53rd road fatality in Kansas City this year, according to data tracked by police. There were 54 road fatalities at this time last year.
