Overnight storms leave more than 27,000 customers without power in Kansas City
More than 27,000 customers remained without power Monday morning after severe thunderstorms with frequent lightning and winds gusts estimated as high as 70 mph swept through the Kansas City area overnight.
As of 7:40 a.m., Evergy was reporting that 22,544 customers were without power.
“Thunderstorms with high winds and lightning moved through eastern Kansas and the Kansas City metro area Sunday evening causing more than 80,000 Evergy customers to lose power,” the utility said. “Our crews are beginning to restore power and many outages are already assigned. We are also bringing in Evergy crews from communities that were not impacted by the storms to assist with restoration.”
Because the storms rolled through after dark, Evergy said it didn’t have an opportunity to assess overall damage, which was necessary to estimate restoration times.
The storms, however, had less of an impact than the storms two weeks ago, which left some people without power for days, Evergy said.
In Jackson County, more than 5,000 customers were without power, according to Evergy. Meanwhile, More than 4,750 customers were without power in Johnson County. Meanwhile, there were over 1,724 customers without power in Platte County, 475 in Clay County, 2,212 in Miami county and 126 in Leavenworth County.
Meanwhile, 4,165 customers were without power in Wyandotte County, according to the Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Public Utilities.
Independence Power & Light was reporting nearly 250 customers were without power.
