Are you tired of taking your dog on walks around your neighborhood? Lucky for you, the Kansas City area has over 100 miles of hiking and walking trails that you and your four-legged friend can enjoy.

Here are five you can visit to get both you and your pup’s legs moving.

Harry Wiggins Trolley Track Trail

This 6-mile trail runs from the Country Club Plaza at East 49th Street and Brookside Boulevard to 85th Street and Prospect Avenue, taking you through Brookside and Waldo in a straight path on crushed gravel. You’ll have to cross through a couple of streets on West 62nd Terrace and West 63rd Street.

It is a shared path, so be cautious of bikers and other residents walking on the trail. You should put your dog on a leash to be safe.

Hodge Park

Located in the Northland at 7000 N.E. Barry Road, this park is the second-largest in Kansas City and has over 1,000 acres with plenty of both wooded and paved trails.

Since there will be other people and dogs around, it’s recommended that you put your dog on a leash.

It’s on private land and is mostly used as a retreat center, but the area is open to the public and features over five miles of hiking trails. Your dog must be on a leash, but they can join you as you wander through this secluded area.

Look at the trail map here. Call 913-441-0451 before you go to make sure it’s open.

Shawnee Mission Park

It’s 1,655 acres, including a 44-acre dog off-leash area, so your pup can roam around and get some exercise. You can directly access the off-leash park at the 87th street and Ridgeview Parkway entrance.

The off-leash area features a paved trail to the beach and lake. The park is at 7900 Renner Road in Shawnee.

Wyandotte County Lake Park

The park on 91st Street and Leavenworth Road offers 1,500 acres of wooded area, with an off-leash dog area that’s near the archery range.

The off-leash section is just a giant field with plenty of space for your dog to run around and play.

It’s not an enclosed dog area, so make sure your dog knows your voice commands. If they’re done running, you can take them on the many trails within the park, but they have to be on a leash.
