Authorities are searching Thursday morning for an SUV that a witness said sunk to the bottom of the Missouri River in Kansas City.

Crews from the Kansas City Fire Department responded around 6 a.m. to the area of the Chouteau Bridge, where a witness said they saw a gray SUV sinking the river, said Michael Hopkins, a spokesman for the department.

Fire crews and drones were dispatched to search for the vehicle, but in minutes it had fully submerged, a witness at the scene told firefighters. The witness also said they didn’t see anyone in the sinking SUV.

Since the fire department doesn’t have underwater search capabilities, it transferred command of the scene to the Kansas City Police Department.

This is an ongoing story that will be updated as more information becomes available.
