Kansas City residents are experiencing power outages as severe thunderstorms roll through the metro area Friday afternoon and evening, and restorations could take days.

As of around 5 p.m., more than 130,000 Evergy customers had lost power, including more than 59,000 in Johnson County and more than 33,000 Jackson County residents.

The Independence Power and Light is reporting 2,200 customers without power.

In Wyandotte County, Kansas, more than 30,000 BPU customers lost power.

Evergy has line crews restoring outages caused by the severe thunderstorm, however, the company expects the areas more severely impacted to be a multiday restoration effort.
