This Johnson County city is the priciest place to live in Kansas, according to new report
Mission Hills is the most expensive neighborhood in Kansas, according to a new report from the financial advice blog Saving Spot.
With an average home price of about $1.9 million, this small Johnson County city prides itself on providing an idyllic environment for residents. Mission Hills’ local perks include a robust urban forestry program and a citywide “No Visit” list to prevent soliciting.
“First-time visitors to Mission Hills can’t help noticing our fountains, statues, sculptures and urns,” the city’s website boasts. “Some are hundreds of years old and many are museum pieces imported from abroad.”
The finance blog calculated the average home prices in neighborhoods across the U.S. using property listings on the real estate site Zillow. They totaled the prices of the homes in each neighborhood and then divided it by the number of properties to arrive at their price averages.
Zillow lists the average home value in Mission Hills as about $1.3 million.
Earlier this year, Zillow named the Kansas City metro one of the hottest real estate markets in the country.
Kansas and Missouri are both among the 40 U.S. states with seven-figure home prices in their most expensive neighborhoods, according to the report.
Across the state line, the report listed Kansas City as the most expensive “neighborhood” in Missouri, with an average home price of around $1.4 million. Zillow lists Kansas City’s average home value as about $229,000. The report looked at home prices for property listings, not average home values for the city as a whole, but the discrepancy suggests a possible error in the report. We will update the story as we learn more.
The lowest average is found in Mississippi’s most expensive neighborhood, Oxford, with an average home price of just under $600,000. The country’s most expensive neighborhood overall is Manalapan, Florida, with an average home price of over $39 million.
Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story included a line that the report listed Kansas City as the most expensive “neighborhood” in Missouri, with an average home price of around $1.4 million without the context of Zillow’s average home value for the city.
