A Missouri man is missing and feared drowned after he was thrown overboard when his sailboat collided with a barge on the Missouri River in Kansas City over the weekend, a highway patrol spokesman said.

At about 1:30 p.m. Saturday, a 13-foot sailboat piloted by 47-year-old Brian E. Hale of Carrollton, Missouri, crashed into a large moored barge on the Missouri River near Interstate 435, said Sgt. Andy Bell, a spokesman for the Missouri Highway Patrol.

It’s believed that Hale fell overboard during the collision. He has not been seen since the crash, Bell said. The highway patrol and the Kansas City Fire Department searched the river, but were not able to find him.

Because he has not been found, there remains some hope that Hale could be found alive, Bell said. The highway patrol is continuing to search for Hale, who is considered a missing person.

The circumstances leading up to the crash are unknown.
