A Saturday afternoon fire caused extensive damage to a Lee’s Summit home as the resident’s dog was still inside, according to a release.

Officers responded at 2:45 p.m. to multiple calls of a fire in the 600 block of Northwest Village Drive, according to Assistant Chief Jim Eden, a spokesman for the Lee’s Summit Fire Department.

Heavy plumes of smoke and flames emerged from the single-family home, Eden said.

By the time firefighters arrived, the resident was outside the home with no injuries.

Authorities believe the resident’s dog remained inside the home throughout the fire.

The flames were brought under control by 3:08 p.m.

Investigators determined that the fire began when sparks from trash that was being burned near the house ignited dry vegetation, spreading it through the building.

As of Saturday evening, the dog was reported missing.
