Two people were taken to the hospital with critical injuries resulting from a crash Monday evening on U.S. 71 in Kansas City, according to police.

The crash happened around 7:15 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the highway near 29th Street, police said. Crash investigators found that a blue Mini Cooper was traveling in the middle lane at a high speed when the vehicle hit the rear end of a semi tractor -trailer.

After the crash, the Mini Cooper veered off the highway before coming to rest in the center median, police said.

The driver and passenger from the Mini Cooper were taken to the hospital, police said.

As of Monday night, the driver remained in critical condition and the passenger’s medical condition was considered stable, police said. The occupants of the semi were uninjured.

Kansas City police continued to investigate the crash Monday night. Northbound lanes of U.S. 71 were reopened after being closed off for approximately 90 minutes.
