An 84-year-old man has died after being hit by a truck backing out of a parking spot at an Independence gas station.

While outside the QuikTrip on the 4000 block of South Little Blue Parkway around 11:30 a.m. Monday, Nial Shirley was hit by a 2017 Dodge Ram, according to a statement from the Independence Police Department.

The force of the vehicle knocked Shirley down and caused him to hit his head. The 84-year-old was taken to the hospital with “a minor head injury,” the statement indicates.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

On Tuesday, police were notified that Shirley had died from his injuries.

The crash is under investigation, according to police. No further information about the collision has been released.
