About a dozen flights have been delayed and another 13 canceled Thursday at Kansas City International Airport, according to FlightAware.com.

Southwest and Delta were the main airlines affected the by the delays and cancellations.

The flight troubles came as a surprise round of rapidly falling snow forced the airfield at KCI to close temporarily during the morning as crews cleared snow from runways. The airport announced shortly after 7 a.m. that the airfield was open again.

Travelers were being urged to check with their airlines for the status of their flights and make any changes to their plans.

The snow also made road conditions dangerous and closed schools across the Kansas City metro area.
