Update: On Monday afternoon, search-and-rescue crews found the dead body of the 21-year-old man in the lake.

Several agencies responded Monday morning to rescue a person who fell into Shawnee Mission Lake in Lenexa.

Crews from the Lenexa Fire Department were called just after 10:20 a.m. to the lake in Shawnee Mission Park, where a person had reportedly fallen through the ice and into the lake, said Assistant Fire Chief Butch Diekemper.

Firefighters couldn’t see the person in the water, so they went into immediate active operations for rescue and also called the Overland Park Dive Team for assistance. Crews remain at the scene along with the Shawnee Mission Park police.

Diekemper said officials don’t know why the person was on the ice or any of the events leading up to the incident.

The rescue efforts are near the park’s off-leash dog area, which is closed until further notice.
