Eastbound I-70 reopens hours after deadly multi-vehicle crash in Kansas City, Kansas
One person was killed and another was injured in a crash that forced a portion of Interstate 70 in Kansas City, Kansas, to be shut down during Wednesday morning’s rush hour, a spokesman for the Kansas Highway Patrol said.
The crash involving two pickup trucks occurred at 5 a.m. between 57th Street and Interstate 635 in the eastbound lanes of I-70, which is part of the Kansas Turnpike in that area, said Lt. David Hundley with KHP’s Troop G, which patrols the Turnpike.
One driver was killed in the crash. The other driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-critical injuries, Hundley said.
A second crash occurred in the area involving three vehicles. Injuries were reported in that crash, but the extent of those injuries and further details were not immediately available.
Because of the timing of the crash, the Kansas City, Kansas, police advised drivers as they headed out on their morning commute to “Please, avoid the area.”
The crash occurred early in the morning commute, forcing eastbound traffic to back up beyond the Turner Diagonal. Traffic was being diverted off the highway at the Turner Diagonal to Kaw Drive or across the Kansas River to Kansas Avenue and then to I-635.
All lanes of the highway reopened about 8:45 a.m., although the right shoulder in the area remained closed, according to Kansas City Scout.
